Dr. Luca Gabutti

Biography

Luca Gabutti is the head of the Internal Medicine Department at the Regional Hospital of Bellinzona, part of the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale EOC, which is a network of public hospitals in southern Switzerland. He became a full professor at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in 2017. He studied human medicine at the University of Lausanne and obtained his MD degree from the University of Bern in 1996. Gabutti completed his PD professorship at the University of Lausanne in 2006. His specialties include internal medicine and nephrology, which he obtained in 1997 and 1999 respectively. He has worked in the dialysis unit and nephrological outpatient clinic and has a keen interest in electrolyte disturbances related to hemodialysis. His research continues to focus on internal medicine subjects such as cardiovascular risk factors, hypertension, pulse wave velocity, and the quality and adequacy of care. He is a member of the Smarter Medicine – Choosing Wisely Switzerland committee and works with the Swiss Academy of Quality Medicine to promote quality care. Additionally, he serves as the vice-dean of studies at USI and represents the institution on the federal exam commission and study/exam commissions. Outside of his professional life, Gabutti enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters and has a hobby of beekeeping, which reflects his love for biodiversity.
