Dr. Luca Gambardella

Biography

Luca Maria Gambardella is a full professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Università della Svizzera italiana in the Faculty of Informatics and a member of IDSIA, the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence. He has been a significant figure in the field, directing the Master's program in Artificial Intelligence since 1995 and engaging in extensive research within this domain. His main research interests include Machine Learning, Simulation, Swarm Robotics, and Metaheuristics, particularly focused on developing optimization algorithms inspired by the behaviors of ant colonies to tackle real-world problems such as transport and assignment scheduling. In addition to a robust publication record with over 330 publications and an h-index of 79 according to Google Scholar, he is actively involved as a guest editor and reviewer for prominent journals in the field. Alongside his academic responsibilities, he is the CEO and co-founder of Artificialy SA, a company based in Lugano dedicated to solutions in artificial intelligence. Gambardella is also recognized for his contributions to artistic initiatives related to technology, such as the interactive installation "NeuralRope#1. Artificial Brain" in Lugano.
