Biography

Lucie Heinzerling, MD, MPH, leads a research group focusing on immuno-oncology and cancer therapy at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Dermatology and Allergology. Her research involves translational basic research aimed at modulating the immune system to improve outcomes in skin cancer immunotherapy, as well as optimizing the management of immune-related side effects (irAE). The group is involved in comparing autoimmune reactions in the context of autoimmune diseases and defining their respective pathomechanisms. Heinzerling's work also encompasses a translational research project aimed at identifying factors that contribute to checkpoint inhibitor resistance and how to overcome this resistance. She is actively engaged in biomarker research, intending to establish prognostic and predictive biomarkers, including a gene expression signature for primary melanoma tumors that assesses the risk of metastatic formation. Additionally, her research investigates the mechanisms by which the microbiome modulates responses to toxicity in cancer patients.
