Lucio Barile is a group leader at the Laboratory for Cardiovascular Theranostics at the Istituto Cardiocentro Ticino, part of the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale in Lugano, Switzerland. His research primarily focuses on understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying cardiovascular diseases. He is particularly interested in finding novel cell-free approaches to promote successful cardioprotection, myocardial regeneration, and prevention of heart failure. Dr. Barile obtained his PhD in Experimental Medicine in 2008 from the University of Rome 'La Sapienza'. He has also been a visiting student at the Institute of Molecular Cardiobiology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA. His research contributions include isolating adult human resident progenitor cells (CPC) from endomyocardial biopsy specimens and investigating homologous recombination in cardiac progenitor cells utilizing AAV-mediated gene targeting. He worked at the Department of Biotechnology and Biosciences at the University of Milano, Bicocca, from 2009 to 2011, providing insights into the electrophysiological properties of differentiated CPC. Currently, he serves as a senior scientist and lab coordinator at the Laboratory for Cellular Molecular Cardiology and has established research topics focused on secreted extracellular vesicles (exosomes) derived from CPC, contributing to significant publications on the topic. Dr. Barile is an active member of the European Society of Cardiology's Working Group on Cardiovascular Regenerative & Reparative Medicine and is involved in the EU-CARDIOPROTECTION COST Action, a pan-European research network aimed at improving the translation of experimental cardioprotective therapies into clinical settings.
