Professor Soibelman obtained his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from the Civil Engineering Department of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. After working as a construction manager for 10 years, he completed his PhD in Civil Engineering Systems from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998, transitioned to Associate Professor at Carnegie Mellon University in 2004, and was promoted to Professor in 2008. In January 2012, he joined the University of Southern California as the Chair of the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Over the course of 25 years, Professor Soibelman has focused his research on advanced data acquisition, management, visualization, mining, and construction operations within advanced infrastructure systems, publishing over 150 works including books and journal papers. He has received numerous research grants from agencies like the National Science Foundation, NASA, and IBM, and has served as chief editor for the American Society of Civil Engineers Computing in Civil Engineering Journal. His contributions have been recognized with several awards including the ASCE Computing Civil Engineering Award and being elected as a fellow of the ASCE.
