Professor Soibelman obtained his Bachelor and Master's Degrees from the Civil Engineering Department of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. After working as a construction manager for 10 years, he obtained his PhD in Civil Engineering Systems from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1998. He started his academic career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 1998 and later became an Associate Professor in the Civil Environmental Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University in 2004, before being promoted to Professor in 2008. In January 2012, he joined the University of Southern California as the Chair of the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research focuses on advanced data acquisition, management, visualization, mining in construction operations, and advanced infrastructure systems. He has published over 150 scholarly works and has received funding from major agencies, including NSF, NASA, and the Department of Energy. He is also the chief editor of the ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering and has earned numerous awards and recognitions during his career, including being elected a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a member of the National Academy of Construction.
