Biography

Lucy E G Donkin is a Senior Lecturer in History of Art at the University of Bristol, specializing in visual material culture from medieval perspectives, particularly in relation to Italy and the wider Mediterranean region. Her research focuses on sacred spaces, examining the creation, use, and decoration of holy grounds. Donkin's book, 'Standing on Holy Ground in the Middle Ages', published by Cornell University Press, discusses themes such as the phenomenon of holy footprints and the liturgical shaping of consecrated spaces. She has co-edited a volume on medieval cartography, which investigates the representation of Jerusalem in the medieval West. Currently, her research delves into the materiality and portability of place, exploring the symbolic movement of soil and its spiritual, political, and environmental implications from the Middle Ages to early modern periods. Donkin is a member of the University of Bristol Centre for Medieval Studies and Centre for Environmental Humanities, and she supervises various MPhil projects related to visual, religious, and urban culture in medieval Italy.
