Lucy Gates is a Senior Research Fellow in Global Health with a particular focus on the epidemiology of musculoskeletal health. Her work primarily targets sub-Saharan Africa, particularly South Africa, Zimbabwe, Gambia, and Nepal. She is involved in a five-year Wellcome Trust funded study known as the Epidemiology, Economic Impact, and Ethnography study (the Fractures-E3 study). This mixed-methods research aims to establish the frequency of vertebral and hip fractures, identify risk factors, assess health costs, and evaluate the consequences and care pathways available within health services. As part of her role, Lucy supports the coordination of work packages addressing the prevalence of vertebral fractures and the incidence of hip fractures in the Gambia and leads imaging analysis to determine the prevalence of vertebral fractures and osteoporosis. Additionally, she co-leads a collaborative initiative with Social Sciences and Engineering aimed at building a multi-disciplinary research vision to address the global impact of lower limb conditions within low-resource settings. This initiative includes a research program to estimate the prevalence of lower limb conditions in Nepal and their individual and societal healthcare impacts.
