Biography

Lucy Pickering is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow, focusing on the fields of Sociological and Cultural Studies. She holds a PhD from Manchester University, which she completed in 2007, centering on embodiment within American counterculture. Since joining the University of Glasgow, her research has involved various collaborative projects addressing bodies, embodiment, and substance use, alongside ethical considerations in ethnographic research. Her work has delved into topics such as menstruation, sanitation, and the transmission of water-borne diseases in both Scotland and Uganda. She has been actively engaged in researching the intersectionality of bodies and the societal inequalities that manifest through concepts such as dirt and ethics. Lucy has edited publications and contributed to areas concerning research ethics, particularly those involving drug use and its impact on communities. She currently supervises students researching topics related to bodies, dirt, and counterculture. As an ethics advisor for various research projects, Lucy aims to explore the social contexts that render specific bodies as 'dirty' and the resultant harms that emerge within these frameworks.
