Biography

Ludwig Paul is a professor of Iranian Studies at the University of Hamburg's Asia-Africa Institute, a position he has held since December 2004. He studied Iranian Studies and Linguistics at the University of Göttingen from 1986 to 1995 and earned his doctorate in 1996 with a thesis on the grammar and dialectology of the Zazaki language, spoken in eastern Anatolia. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem during the academic year of 1995/96. From 1996 to 2003, he served as an assistant in the Seminar for Iranian Studies at the University of Göttingen, where he habilitated in 2002 with a philological study of the Jewish-Persian texts of the Cairo Genizah. His current research interests include historical dialectology, Persian literature, and the role of lingua franca. He oversees multiple research projects regarding Persian in the Ottoman Empire, Luri documentation, classical period dialect literature, and the philological study of medieval Iranian poetry. Paul has been actively involved in numerous academic initiatives and continues to contribute significantly to the field of Iranian Studies through his research and publications.
