Luet Wong is a Professor of Chemistry in the Inorganic Chemistry section of the Chemistry department. He obtained his BA in 1984 and his DPhil in 1987 from the University of Oxford. Following his studies, he pursued research in organometallic chemistry and carbon-hydrogen bond activation under the supervision of Malcolm Green, before becoming a postdoctoral researcher with Guy-Newton at Wolfson College, Oxford. In 1989, he received an SERC-NATO Postdoctoral Fellowship to work on biological electron transfer enzyme engineering with Harry Gray at the California Institute of Technology. Wong was appointed to a University Lectureship in the Chemistry department at Oxford in 1991 and became a Royal Society University Research Fellow in 1993. By 1994, he was appointed a tenured University Lectureship and Fellowship at St Hugh’s College, eventually taking the title of Professor of Chemistry in 2019. His research group focuses on developing evolved enzymes for biocatalytic processes, particularly selective carbon-hydrogen bond oxidation. Wong also leads a research team at the Oxford University Suzhou Centre for Advanced Research in Suzhou, China, and in 2013 founded Oxford Biotrans to apply biotechnological processes for the production of fine chemicals and intermediates in agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals.
