Luis Alvarez received his B.A. in History from the University of California, San Diego and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Texas at Austin. His research and teaching interests center on race, popular culture, social movements, Chicanas/os, Latinas/os, and U.S.-Mexico borderlands. He is the author of 'Power Zoot: Youth Culture Resistance During World War II,' published by the University of California Press in the American Crossroads Series, and 'Chicanx Utopias: Pop Culture Politics Possible,' published by the University of Texas Press in the Historia USA Series. Additionally, he co-edited 'University Possible' published by University Readers Press. At UC San Diego, he has served as Chair of the Department of History and Associate Dean for Academic Personnel Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion within the School of Arts and Humanities. He is also the inaugural Director of the Institute of Arts and Humanities and the Director of the Chicanx Latinx Studies Program, where he has led efforts such as the Latinx Cluster Hire Initiative. As a core member of the Race Oral History San Diego Project, he collaborates with faculty, librarians, students, and community partners to create a community-based archive focused on the histories of race, migration, militarism, and the border in San Diego. Alvarez is currently working on a new book titled 'Border Pitch: History of the Mexico-U.S. Soccer Rivalry,' which explores themes of sport, diaspora, migration, and citizenship in relation to the rivalry of the El Tri Men’s National Team. He is also a supporter of FC Barcelona.
