Biography

Luis R. Alvarez-Hernandez originally from Puerto Rico began his studies in social work and completed a Bachelor of Social Work at Dalton State College, followed by a Master of Social Work with a Clinical Concentration and a PhD in Social Work from the University of Georgia. He has engaged in global social work experiences across Latin American countries. Dr. Alvarez-Hernandez’s research centers on the social determinants of health within Latinx, LGBTQ+, and immigrant communities, with particular attention to liberatory experiences of individuals living at the intersections of multiple identities. He has over 10 years of experience as a bilingual clinical social worker in mental health and healthcare settings and employs critical feminist theories in his teaching and research. Dr. Alvarez-Hernandez teaches courses focused on direct practice with individuals, families, and groups.
