Biography

Luis Barrales-Mora, originally from Mexico City, is currently an adjunct associate professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology's Lorraine campus. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Aeronautics in 2001 and a Master's degree in Metallurgy in 2003 from the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico. In 2003, he was awarded a grant for his doctoral studies by the German Academic Exchange Service, which allowed him to pursue a Ph.D. in Materials Science at RWTH-Aachen University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 2008. Following his doctoral research, Luis held a postdoctoral position at the Institute of Physical Metallurgy and Metal Physics until 2010. He was subsequently promoted to lecturer and research group leader, and in 2015-2016, he served as the interim director of the institute. His research focuses on the simulation of physical processes involved in the microstructure evolution of metals, particularly the thermal stability of nanocrystalline materials and the effects of synthesis and processing on the properties of metallic materials. He has developed research topics including massively parallel materials modeling, mechanisms of grain boundary migration, and heat treatment effects in high-Mn steels and high entropy alloys.
