Luis Ferreira Pires was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1961. He obtained his B.Sc. degree in Electronics from the 'Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica' in São José dos Campos, Brazil, in 1983. He completed his M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Computer Networks at the 'Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo' in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1989. He earned his PhD degree from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Twente, Enschede, Netherlands, in September 1994. Since 1988, he has been associated with the University of Twente, initially as a research fellow at the Faculty of Computer Science. He became an Assistant Professor in 1992 and has served as an Associate Professor since 1994 within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. He is a member of the Services & Cyber-Security (SCS) group and has professional interests that include design methodologies for distributed systems, architecture for distributed systems, and middleware platforms for telematics applications. He is responsible for Master courses in Service-Oriented Architecture and Model-Driven Engineering, as well as contributing to Bachelor Modules on Software Systems and Introduction to Business.
