Biography

Luis Gomes is a Senior Lecturer in Portuguese within the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Glasgow. His research interests focus on interdisciplinary subjects involving Portugal and Spain from 1580 to 1640, particularly exploring the works of the poet Vasco Mousinho de Quevedo Castelo Branco. Quevedo’s literature, which is both admired and vilified, sheds light on the literary canon and patrimonialism through the exploration of emblems. Gomes has contributed significantly to the field of emblem studies, particularly in relation to its role in Portuguese culture during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He is the Deputy Director of the Stirling Maxwell Centre for the Study of Text/Image Cultures, utilizing the material resources of the Glasgow University Library and the Hunterian Museum Art Gallery to support his research. He supervises areas such as Portuguese emblem literature and late 16th to early 17th-century Portuguese literature. Additionally, Gomes has taught several courses, including Beginner Portuguese Language and Golden Age Iberian Literature, and has served in various administrative roles within the university, such as the Programme Director for Portuguese Studies and the Internationalisation Officer for the School of Modern Languages and Cultures.
