Biography

Luis Porangaba is a Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Glasgow's School of Law, having joined in 2019. Previously, he held the position of Departmental Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Oxford's Law Faculty. In 2020, he became the Director of the LLM in Intellectual Property and Digital Economy. He served as Co-Director of the Centre for Regulation in the Creative Economy from 2021 to 2024 and co-leads the Law Innovation research theme as part of a CREATe infrastructure grant awarded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Luis holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford and earned MJur MPhil (Distinction) degrees. He completed his LLB at Pontifícia Universidade Católica in Rio de Janeiro. Luis' research primarily focuses on intellectual property law, specifically trademarks, patents, and unfair competition. He is particularly interested in normative policy-oriented approaches to law and interdisciplinary work that explores the intersections of intellectual property with marketing, behavioral studies, and innovation theory. He is currently working on a monograph titled 'Functions in Context: Reconceptualising the Scope of Trade Mark Infringement,' under contract with Cambridge University Press. Additionally, he has experience as an editor and editorial board member for the Trademark Reporter and acts as a peer reviewer for various academic journals and funding bodies. Before entering UK academia, Luis practiced law extensively as a legal advisor and litigator in Brazil, and he taught Intellectual Property at the postgraduate level.
