A major figure in the art history of the Iberian Peninsula, specialist in Baroque and Surrealism, Luís de Moura Sobral paved the way for all fields of study on Portuguese and Latin American art at the Department of Art History and Cinematic Studies of the University of Montreal, where he taught for 40 years and directed from 1987 to 1995. This intellectual left Portugal during the dictatorship of Antonio de Oliveira Salazar. After a period in Belgium where he obtained a doctorate in art history from the Catholic University of Leuven, he settled in Quebec. Over four decades, he demonstrated intense activity related to education and research, along with an uninterrupted publication of books, articles, conference proceedings, and exhibition catalogs. He was among the first scholars to establish the notion of peripheral art and examined lesser-known figures in art history such as the Spaniard Juan de Valdés Leal and Pierre Lafleur, a Quebec surrealist painter. His works on Bento Coelho da Silveira revitalized the study of 17th-century Portuguese painting. He held the Chair in Portuguese Culture and is the author of the documentary Azulejos, a ceramic utopia, which has been awarded in Lisbon and presented at the International Festival of Art Film in Montreal in 2014.
