Biography

Luis Carlos Sotelo-Castro is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre at Concordia University and a core member of the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling (COHDS). He was Concordia’s Canada Research Chair in Oral History Performance from 2016 to 2021. His research interests focus on the transformative power of listening to first-person narratives of individuals impacted by social trauma, utilizing state-of-the-art technology in performance spaces. He established the Acts Listening Lab (ALLab) in 2018, which serves as a world-leading hub for investigating research teaching, performance creation, social drama, and community-building. His work includes innovative methodologies in oral history and social innovation, emphasizing audience participation and the politics of memory. He has a background as a Senior Lecturer in Applied Theatre and Community Arts at the University of East London and extensive involvement in interdisciplinary groups, including the Quebec Working Group to support Colombia's Truth Commission. Luis actively supervises PhD students conducting research in applied theatre and oral history performance.
