Biography

Luis Videgaray is a Senior Lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management and the Director of the MIT AI Policy for the World Project. Prior to joining MIT, he served as Mexico's Foreign Minister and Finance Minister. As Foreign Minister (2017-2018), he led Mexico's relationship with the Trump administration and successfully renegotiated NAFTA, now known as USMCA. He was a founding member of the Lima Group, promoting regional diplomatic efforts to restore democracy in Venezuela and took a leading role in inclusive debates on AI and new technologies at the UN. As Finance Minister (2012-2016), he oversaw historic energy liberalization, telecommunications reform to foster competition, and tax reforms that reduced the country’s dependence on oil revenues, and he was responsible for drafting Mexico’s new Fintech Law. He was named Finance Minister of the Year by Banker Magazine and recognized as a Leading Global Thinker by Foreign Policy Magazine. In 2012, he served as the campaign manager for President Peña Nieto and headed the transition team. His earlier career included being a member of Mexico's Congress, where he chaired the Budget Committee, and he also served as Secretary of Finance for the State of Mexico. Mr. Videgaray has a career background in investment banking, advising on mergers and acquisitions and private equity transactions. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT and a BA in Economics from Mexico's ITAM.
