Dr. Escobar-Hoyos obtained a master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia. As a Fulbright Scholar, she pursued a Ph.D. in Cancer Molecular Cellular Pharmacology at Stony Brook University, under the mentorship of Dr. Kenneth Shroyer. The overarching goal of Dr. Escobar-Hoyos' lab is to find a cure for pancreatic and lung cancers. Her team seeks to understand targeted somatic mutations and aberrant RNA processing in tumors to develop novel therapies. Dr. Escobar-Hoyos focuses on understanding how aberrant RNA splicing contributes to the maintenance of tumors and the impairment of anti-tumor immune response. Additionally, she aims to test a novel therapy called Splicing-Hit Oligonucleotide Therapy (SHOT), which corrects RNA splicing errors to selectively kill pancreatic adenocarcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma cells. Her lab collaborates actively with other laboratories at Yale University, Stony Brook University, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
