Biography

Luke Fidler is an Assistant Professor in Art History at the University of Southern California. He specializes in the art of early to high-medieval Europe, with particular emphasis on German-speaking lands, Scandinavia, and the British Isles. His current book project presents a conceptual framework of 'coercive form' to describe the ambitious experiments in twelfth-century sculpture. His research interests encompass medieval European art from approximately 400 to 1400 CE, theories and practices of sculpture, and the intersection of aesthetics and ideology. He explores diverse topics such as environmental art, premodern Arctic visual culture, and critical histories of landscape. Additionally, he is engaged in studying the political economy as it relates to incarceration, formalism, and medieval fictionality, as well as modern German art, literature, and theory, including Expressionism and the works of Mann, Adorno, and Marx.
