Luke Fleming is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Montreal. His research focuses on developing a typological, comparative, and intercultural approach to social indexicality, emphasizing a holistic study of social pragmatics that interlinks linguistic forms, functions, and ideologies. He has a broad spectrum of interests in ethnolinguistics, spanning from the origins of languages to the relationship between language and social gender. Currently, he undertakes two comparative regional studies in ethnolinguistics; one examines honorific language across Theravada Buddhist linguistic groups such as Lao, Khmer, Thai, and Burmese, with a particular focus on Sinhala. The second study investigates the use of honorific pronouns in South Asian languages, especially Tamil. This research is part of a comprehensive study on honorific pronominal usage, provisionally titled 'Difference Deference: Comparative Linguistic Anthropology Honorific Pronouns'.
