Dr. Luke Pitcher

Biography

Luke Pitcher is an Associate Professor in Classical Languages and Literature at the University of Oxford, affiliated with Somerville College. He specializes in the reception and historiography of ancient texts, focusing on the narrative techniques and character portrayals in works by classical historians such as Polybius, Appian, Herodian, and Cassius Dio. His recent contributions to the field are highlighted in his work with the Studies in Ancient Greek Narrative series. Pitcher is currently writing a monograph on Appian, which further explores these themes within ancient historiography. His academic qualifications include a BA, MA, Mst, and DPhil from Oxford, complemented by a PGCert from Durham. He has an active presence in the academic community, contributing to discussions and research on the narrative structures and the contexts of ancient history, aiming to shed light on the complexities of how history was recorded and understood in antiquity.
