Luke Roman’s research interests encompass Latin literature, Renaissance humanism, and the classical tradition, focusing on the representations of the city of Rome and the materiality of texts and books. His monograph, 'Poetic Autonomy in Ancient Rome' (Oxford University Press, 2014), explores the rhetoric of autonomy in Roman first-person poetry from the late Republic to the early Empire. Roman was a fellow at Villa Tatti in Florence (The Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies) from 2011 to 2012, where he studied the works of Neapolitan humanist Giovanni Pontano, ultimately producing volume editions of Pontano’s writings for the Tatti Renaissance Library Series. His current research, supported by an SSHRC Insight Grant, examines the significance of classical sites in Renaissance Italy, particularly through the works of Italian humanists. He is actively involved in collaborative projects examining the global perspectives within the discipline of Classics. Additionally, he has extensive teaching experience on classical and post-classical Latin literature, ancient Greek, Roman history, and Renaissance humanism. His academic journey includes a PhD from Stanford University (1999) and a BA from Harvard University (1994).
