Biography

Luke Rostill is an Associate Professor of Property Law at the University of Oxford and a Fellow Tutor in Law at Trinity College. He also holds the position of Academic Fellow at Middle Temple. He studied Jurisprudence (Law) at Wadham College, Oxford, where he was awarded the Wronker Prize for overall performance in the law finals. He continued at Wadham for his BCL, MPhil, and DPhil. His DPhil research, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, focused on property law under the supervision of Professor Ben McFarlane. Before his current role, Luke served as a Supernumerary Teaching Fellow in Law at St John's College, Oxford. Luke's research interests center on private law, particularly property rights, and are primarily doctrinal with a focus on the theoretical and philosophical questions of property law. His recent work includes studies on the relativity of title in common law and the nature and grounds of ownership. He also explores the complexities of property rights in relation to human rights law, tort law, and unjust enrichment. His monograph, 'Possession, Relative Title, and Ownership in English Law,' was published by Oxford University Press in February 2021. Luke has a strong teaching portfolio, offering courses in Trusts, Personal Property, and Roman Law, and supervising postgraduate research in property law and trusts.
