Lulu Qian is a Professor of Bioengineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). She obtained her Bachelor of Engineering from Southeast University in 2002 and her Ph.D. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2007. Prior to her current role, she served as an Assistant Professor at Caltech from 2013 to 2018, before advancing to the rank of Professor in 2019. Her research focuses on designing and constructing nucleic-acid systems that exhibit programmable behaviors, including the recognition of molecular events in their environment, processing information, making decisions, and taking actions. On a more advanced level, her work explores the principles of molecular programs found in nature and how to embed control in biochemical systems that directly interact with molecules. The ultimate goal of her research is to recreate synthetic molecular programs that approach the complexity and sophistication of life.
Most Caltech graduate programs are PhD-only. GRE General and Subject tests vary by department; many have made them optional or no longer accept them.
