Biography

Luo Gu is an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on how cells sense and respond to mechanical and biochemical cues in their microenvironment. His findings are instrumental in designing and creating innovative biomaterials that provide controlled chemical signals to direct cell behavior. Currently, his projects include developing tissue-like viscoelastic biomaterials to explore the mechanics of stem cell biology and tissue regeneration, engineering immune niches in biomaterials for cancer immunotherapy, and creating novel nanomaterials for gene editing. Gu earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Peking University in China in 2004, followed by a master's degree in chemistry from the University of California, San Diego in 2007. He completed his doctorate in chemistry with a specialization in multiscale biology at UCSD in 2012. After his PhD, he undertook postdoctoral training at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering before joining the faculty at the Whiting School of Engineering in 2017.
