Biography

Luthfi Adam is a research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Research at Monash University, Indonesia. He obtained his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 2020. His dissertation, titled "Cultivating Power: Botanical Gardens Empire-Building Netherlands East Indies, 1745-1917," won the Harold Perkin Prize in the Department of History at Northwestern. Luthfi has a keen interest in the environmental history of modern Southeast Asia, specifically focusing on the colonial and postcolonial contexts of Greater Jakarta. His current book project is an expansion of his dissertation, examining the historical development of colonial gardens, plantation practices, and their implications for contemporary environmental challenges, including deforestation, urban pollution, and climate change. He has previously been a fellow at the Garden Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, Harvard University, for the 2022-2023 academic year and is actively involved in research addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and environmental justice.
