Biography

Luvell Anderson is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He completed his PhD at Rutgers University in 2011 and was the inaugural Alain Locke Postdoctoral Fellow at Penn State. His academic journey includes faculty positions at the University of Memphis and Syracuse University. He is co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Applied Philosophy of Language and the Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Race. Anderson has published numerous academic articles focusing on racial humor, racial slurs, and hate speech, and he has contributed to prominent venues such as the New York Times, Boston Review, and Mediapost. He currently is completing a book titled Ethics of Racial Humor, which is set to be published by Oxford University Press. Additionally, he co-hosts the podcast SNL101, which aims to incorporate sketches from Saturday Night Live into educational settings. His latest project involves a philosophical meditation on the work of Dave Chappelle regarding humor, language, and freedom.
