Biography

Lyana Patrick is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. She is a member of the Stellat'en Nation and has Acadian/Scottish heritage. Dr. Patrick earned her BA and MA from the University of Victoria, specializing in Canadian history, film studies, and Indigenous governance. She studied Indigenous documentary film at the University of Washington as part of a Canada/US Fulbright Fellowship. In 2019, she completed her PhD in Community and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia. Her doctoral research connects Indigenous community health and well-being with self-determination and urban health governance models. Dr. Patrick’s research focuses on challenging colonial constructions of community planning and its connection to health and well-being. Her work promotes Indigenous understandings of community building and seeks to address the factors that hinder Indigenous peoples' community connectedness. She is interested in promoting institutional change and decolonization in education, postcolonial educational approaches, municipal planning, and participatory processes in community engagement.
