Biography

Lydia Bourouiba is a Professor in the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering, holding the Japan Steel Industry Provost Chair Professorship. She directs the Fluid Dynamics Disease Transmission Laboratory and co-leads the Fluids Health Network. Bourouiba received her PhD from McGill University, focusing on wave-turbulence interactions in geophysical flows. Her training as a physical applied mathematician informs her research interests that span fundamental and applied questions in fluid physics and biophysics, especially the transmission of pathogens through complex biofluids. Her work investigates the multilayer dynamics of fluid fragmentation, splash atomization, and bubble dynamics, with applications in health, environment, and industry. Notably, she received the Ole Madsen Mentoring Award and the Tse Cheuk Ng Tai's Prize for Innovative Research in Health Sciences, among others. Elected fellow of the American Physical Society in 2021 and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in 2022, she actively contributes to understanding fluid dynamics and their implications for public health.
