Biography

Lydia Zeldenrust is a lecturer specializing in Late Medieval Literature with research extending into the Early Modern period. Her work adopts a comparative and transcultural approach, examining the movement and transmission of texts across regional linguistic borders while integrating literary studies with historical book-historical methodologies. Zeldenrust is particularly engaged with the English literary activity and book production in Continental Europe, focusing on both manuscripts and early printed texts. She aims to share her enthusiasm for medieval books with non-academic audiences through various mediums, including radio and public talks. Her monograph, 'Mélusine Romance in Medieval Europe: Translation, Circulation, Material Contexts', published by D. S. Brewer in 2020 and shortlisted for the University English Book Prize in 2021, investigates the romance of Mélusine, a cursed fairy woman, and its cross-cultural narratives. In her recent project funded by the Leverhulme Trust, 'Continental Connections: European Bestselling Romances in England (c. 1400-1600)', she explores the arrival of popular romances in England, challenging traditional narratives centered on national canons. Zeldenrust's educational pursuits also include supervising projects on medieval romance and teaching courses on Middle English and Early Modern English literature at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
