Biography

Professor Dearborn, a licensed architect and NCARB certificate holder, uses design insights to study the transactional relationships between people and environments, particularly focusing on multi-scalar connections among residents, dwelling environments, and cultural change. Her work engages groups that are traditionally underserved in environmental design professions, leading to outcomes that address potential built-environment policy to create equitable experiences related to health vulnerabilities. Her research interests in spatial justice, inclusion, and health equity underpin her approach to teaching, research, and service. With a strong commitment to active learning and student-centered pedagogical approaches, she teaches undergraduate and graduate architecture studios aimed at creating healthy and socially sustainable communities through evidence-based participatory processes. She supervises Ph.D. advisees in architecture and landscape architecture who undertake innovative research on the environmental determinants of physical, mental, and social health. An active member of the AIA Design and Health Research Consortium, Professor Dearborn is also a co-author of the AIA Framework for Design Excellence – Design Well-being. Her professional collaborations include work with the University of Florida’s Shimberg Center for Housing Studies and design firm Kahler Slater. She has authored numerous book chapters and articles exploring social justice and equity issues related to minority peoples and their environments, addressing human health and well-being.
