Professor Dearborn’s research focuses on the mutual interaction between people and environments, particularly the relationship between residential environments and cultural change. She studies the Hmong in Southeast Asia and Hmong immigrants, as well as African Americans in inner-city neighborhoods and Native Americans. She is heavily involved in the FAA’s Illinois Action Research, and her work and courses address issues of social justice and the equity of minority peoples, engaging the physical, social, economic, and political aspects of the environment to address human health, well-being, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
