Biography

M.J. Thavanathan is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is of Sri Lankan origin and attended medical school at the University of Sri Lanka from 1968 to 1973. He received his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1981. Thavanathan had his registrar training in general surgery at Scunthorpe General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital in the UK. He worked as a general surgeon in Goose Bay, Labrador, from 1985 to 1989 before completing further residency training at Memorial University from 1989 to 1991. He has been practicing as a general surgeon in St. John's since 1991. Thavanathan has a special interest in hepatobiliary surgery, therapeutic endoscopy, and advanced laparoscopic procedures. He aims to simplify liver resection procedures and is passionate about providing services to the underdeveloped world.
