Professor Dr. M Telmissany

Biography

Telmissany is an Associate Professor of Cinema and Arabic Studies in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa. He is the Director of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the founder of the Arab Canadian Studies Research Group (ACANS). In 2021, Telmissany was awarded the prestigious Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Republic, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the arts and literature. He is a novelist and columnist with numerous academic publications in both English and French, exploring topics in media, film theories, and the representation of popular neighborhoods in cinema. His research interests include the emergence of minor cinemas, women in transnational filmmaking, and the impact of streaming video on demand platforms in the Arab world. Additionally, Telmissany has published five novels and several short story collections, with his work translated into multiple languages. He has received literary awards in both Egypt and France for his contributions to literature, notably for his novel 'Duniazad'.
