Biography

Maarten de Boer is a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the College of Engineering, holding a courtesy appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science from the University of Minnesota in 1996. His research interests focus on processing and nanomechanical behavior of new materials, including the design, fabrication, testing, and characterization of micromachined test platforms. His work explores the interplay between processing, the environment, and the mechanical properties of materials, which encompass strength, fracture, fatigue, creep, residual stress, adhesion, and friction.
