Dr. Maarten De Boer

Biography

Maarten de Boer is a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the College of Engineering, holding a courtesy appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science from the University of Minnesota in 1996. His research interests focus on processing and nanomechanical behavior of new materials, including the design, fabrication, testing, and characterization of micromachined test platforms. His work explores the interplay between processing, the environment, and the mechanical properties of materials, which encompass strength, fracture, fatigue, creep, residual stress, adhesion, and friction. De Boer has published over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and has an h-index of 30, presenting more than 40 invited talks. He has also been recognized as an inventor on seven patents. His research activities have received funding from the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, NASA, and the Army Research Laboratory. De Boer has taught a range of courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including topics such as mechanical behavior, solid mechanics, materials selection, and microelectromechanical systems.
