Biography

Maarten Hornikx is a Full Professor in Building Acoustics and Vice-Dean of the Department of the Built Environment at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He leads the Building Acoustics Chair Unit within the Building Physics Services group. His research focuses on computational modeling of sound propagation in built environments, with applications including the development of sound reproduction platforms in mixed realities and investigating how sound propagates in various settings influenced by vegetation and meteorological effects. Hornikx actively promotes open research software and has taken a leadership role within the academic community, coordinating significant projects such as the H2020-ITN project Acoutect. He has an extensive educational background, having received his MSc in Architecture and Building Planning in 2004 and his PhD in Applied Acoustics from Chalmers University of Technology in 2009. His postdoctoral research was supported by a Marie Curie grant, and he has held various positions within TU/e since 2012, culminating in his promotion to full professor in 2019. Hornikx has served in numerous academic capacities, including as chair of the Computational Acoustics Technical Committee of the European Acoustics Association and Associate Editor for the journal Acta Acustica. He has also been recognized as an eScience Center fellow. Throughout his career, Hornikx has made significant contributions to the field of acoustics and has served as a scientific director for the 4TU.Built Environment Center.
