Biography

Maarten Prak is a Professor of Social Economic History at Utrecht University. His research focuses on the Middle Ages and Early Modern history, particularly concerning the lives of inhabitants in European, especially Dutch, towns. His major research topics include citizenship, institutions, cultural industries, guilds, and human capital. He has served as the chair of the Humanities Board at the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) from 2014 to 2016 and was a member of the board of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) from 2016 to 2020. Currently, he is a member of the board of ALLEA (All European Academies). Prak has also been a visiting scholar at several prestigious universities, including Exeter, Cambridge, the London School of Economics, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, and Westfälische-Wilhems-Universität Münster. His inaugural lecture took place on November 24, 1993.
