Biography

Maarten Stremler is an assistant professor of constitutional law at Maastricht University. His research and teaching are focused on democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights in the context of the Netherlands and the European Union. He is a member of the editorial board of the European Yearbook of Constitutional Law and serves on the board of The Netherlands Association for Philosophy of Law. Additionally, he is a fellow at the Montesquieu Institute. Currently, he is engaged in a research project that explores the foundations of constitutional scholarship, which is supported by the Statesman Thorbecke Fund from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Stremler’s academic background includes studies in law and philosophy at Leiden University, Freie Universität Berlin, and the European University Institute (EUI). He obtained his PhD from Tilburg University with a thesis on constitutional oversight in Member States of the European Union, funded by a Research Talent grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). He has also been associated with the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, where he further developed his research interests.
