Dr. Maarten Van Bottenburg

Biography

Maarten van Bottenburg is a Professor of Public Administration and Organization Science at Utrecht University, where he coordinates the focus area 'Sport & Society'. His academic journey began with a study in sociology at Utrecht University before receiving his doctorate at the University of Amsterdam, earning cum laude honors. His doctoral dissertation on the differential popularization of sports was published by the University of Illinois Press in 2001. Over the past thirty years, he has engaged in academic research and consultancy focused on the intersection of sports and social issues. He has held positions including lecturer at Fontys University of Applied Sciences and research director at the W.J.H. Mulier Institute, a leading center for sports and society research in the Netherlands. Van Bottenburg has contributed extensively to academic journals in the field of sport management and policy, and he has worked with various sports organizations, governmental bodies, and private companies to address public values and issues related to sports. His recent publications cover a range of topics including social inclusion in club life, international medal rankings, and issues of violence and cheating in sports.
