Dr. Maarten Van Emst

Biography

Maarten van Emst is a senior lecturer at Utrecht University, specializing in Pathobiology. He is responsible for developing, evaluating, improving, and delivering teaching in Physiology, particularly during the Bachelor's phase of the Dgk program. Originally trained as a biologist rather than a veterinarian, he holds a degree in neuropharmacology and ethology. During his PhD trajectory at UMCU, he conducted fundamental research on inner ear disorders at the ENT division. In his current role, he is unique in that he has a full-time teaching position. He possesses qualifications such as the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) and the Senior Teaching Qualification (SKO) and has participated in the course offered by the Center of Excellence in University Teaching. As chair of the Faculty Assessment Committee for Teaching Qualifications, he is tasked with guiding and evaluating the training of (junior) lecturers. His teaching responsibilities extend beyond the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, as he is also involved in developing and delivering biomedical education for Bachelor's programs in Biomedical Sciences, Earth Sciences, and University College Utrecht.
