Biography

Maartje Stols-Witlox is an Associate Professor in the Paintings Conservation programme at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in the examination of historical paintings, particularly in relation to historical artists’ recipes and the reconstruction of historically informed materials. She has published widely on issues related to historical grounds in North West Europe, focusing on reconstruction methodologies and the investigation of conservation history through recipe research. In 2017, she co-organized the interdisciplinary NIAS-Lorentz workshop aimed at establishing a network for researchers employing performative methodologies in conservation. Stols-Witlox is also the project leader for the NWO Free Competition Humanities project that analyzes colored grounds in Netherlandish painting from 1550 to 1650. Additionally, she is involved in the EU Horizon 2021 project GoGreen, which aims to help conservators adopt greener practices in conservation by researching alternative methods and developing accessible tools and educational materials. She has a strong academic background, holding both a BA and MA in Art History from the University of Leiden, and has further specialized in conservation through postgraduate studies at the Limburg Conservation Institute and an internship at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge. Her PhD thesis dealt with historical recipes for preparatory layers in oil paintings, which was later published. Stols-Witlox has also been actively involved in numerous scientific boards and committees, contributing to the field of conservation and heritage science.
