Biography

Macarena Gomez-Barris is a writer and scholar focused on decolonial environmental humanities, extractivism, media environments, cultural theory, and artistic practice. She is the author of four books, including 'Extractive Zone: Social Ecologies Decolonial Perspectives' (Duke University Press, 2017), which examines scenes of ruinous extractive capitalism. Her works also include 'Beyond Pink Tide: Art and Political Undercurrents in the Américas' (University of California Press, 2018), which discusses the role of submerged art and solidarities, and 'Memory Dwells: Culture and State Violence in Chile' (2009). Gomez-Barris is a co-editor of 'Sociology of Trace' (2010) and serves as a series editor for Diana Taylor's 'Dissident Acts' with Duke University Press. Her forthcoming book, 'Sea’s Edge' (Duke University Press), considers colonial oceanic transits as generative spaces between land and sea. In addition to her written work, she is a contributor to numerous essays and curatorial events, and serves as the founder and director of the Elemental Media Lab, hosted within the Department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University.
