Biography

Machteld Vonk is a Professor of Notarial Law at Radboud University, specializing in International and European Family Law. Her research interests encompass various aspects of the relationship between children and their parents/caregivers in law, including adoption, parentage, custody, visitation, child protection, and primarily artificial reproduction and the resulting legal questions regarding parenthood. Vonk approaches these complex issues mainly from a child law perspective and focuses on the rights derived from the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) for children and their caregivers. She believes that a multidisciplinary and comparative approach offers an essential additional dimension to the research. Over the coming decade, there is a need for further investigation into the foundations of parental rights and duties to create family law that provides a usable basis for assigning rights and duties to parents in the future. This includes developments such as multifamily parenting, surrogacy, and future advancements like ectogenesis and in vitro gametogenesis.
