Mackenzie Graham is a Senior Research Fellow at the Ethox Centre, Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities at the University of Oxford. Currently, she is part of the National Consortium for Intelligent Medical Imaging (NCIMI), investigating the ethical issues arising from the collection, storage, and sharing of digitized medical images. Her project aims to facilitate the ethical integration of clinical imaging enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) into medical practice. Mackenzie received her PhD in Philosophy from Western University in Canada in 2016, specializing in moral philosophy and bioethics. Her research particularly focuses on the ethical questions arising from the application of medical imaging, especially functional neuroimaging in cases of severe brain injury, and its implications for clinical research practice. In her involvement with NCIMI, she explores the necessary ethical requirements for fostering public trust and confidence in the research that utilizes medical image data. Additionally, she is interested in the ethical management of incidental findings that arise from neuroimaging research as part of the Northern European Returning Results Network. Before joining Oxford in 2018, Mackenzie spent several years as a research associate at the Brain and Mind Institute at Western University, investigating the ethical implications surrounding the discovery of ‘covert awareness’ in patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (persistent vegetative state). Throughout her career, Mackenzie has focused on addressing challenges related to communicating research results to patients’ families while collaborating with world-leading neuroscientists, neurologists, epidemiologists, and bioethicists.
