Professor Madeleine Reeves is a social anthropologist with a focus on migration, borders, and state sovereignty. She has amassed extensive experience in these fields over several decades, contributing to critical anthropological discourse. After completing her undergraduate studies in Social Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge, she obtained her PhD from the same institution in 2008. Her work traverses the anthropology of borders and geopolitical conflicts, particularly in Central Asia, where she conducted extensive ethnographic research, especially in the Ferghana Valley. Her monograph, Border Work: Spatial Lives of the State in Rural Central Asia, published by Cornell University Press in 2014, challenged common understandings of political transformations within the region. Professor Reeves has held teaching positions at the University of Cambridge, the American University of Central Asia, and most recently, St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford. She has published widely, including books and journal articles, and serves on various editorial and advisory boards for academic journals. Currently, her research continues to explore the links between labor migration and the social fabric of post-Soviet states, while she is also involved in developing new linkages between labor migration and reproductive capacity in the region.
