Biography

Madeline Hayes is an Assistant Professor in Molecular Genetics, specializing in Developmental Stem Cell Biology at Hospital for Sick Children. Her research focuses on understanding the underlying mechanisms of pediatric cancers, utilizing zebrafish genetic models and xenograft transplantation approaches to assess genetic links and novel drug combinations in vivo. Dr. Hayes aims to inform future therapeutic opportunities for patients by defining high-risk phenotypes, such as metastases and relapse in neuroblastoma and rhabdomyosarcoma. Collaborating with Dr. Bret Pearson, she has developed a glioblastoma-like brain tumor model to rapidly assess genes associated with cancer stem cells. Her work is supported by the Terry Fox Foundation-led PRecision Oncology Young PeopLE (PROFYLE) consortium, where she investigates tumor cell dynamics by transplanting human tumor cells into immune-deficient adult zebrafish and screening drugs likely to translate directly to patient care.
