Madeline McMahon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at The University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on intellectual, cultural, and religious history in early modern Europe, specifically from approximately 1450 to 1800. McMahon's forthcoming book, 'Shepherds of the Dark: Bishops and the Creation of Catholic Knowledge in Early Modern Italy,' investigates the role of bishops' households in the Catholic Reformation in Italy. By examining manuscripts, early print materials, and visual artifacts from the palaces of early modern bishops, she highlights how bishops redefined their administrative roles during a period of significant contestation. Her articles have been published in prestigious journals such as Book History, Journal of Ecclesiastical History, International Journal of Classical Tradition, and Past & Present. McMahon holds a BA and a PhD in history from Princeton University and also earned an MPhil in early modern history at the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. Additionally, she has been a Fulbright Research fellow in Italy and has received several fellowships from institutions including Houghton Library, Huntington Library, and Mellon-CES for her dissertation completion.
